Wardlaw starts strong

The Wardlaw Academy basketball teams have started the 2006-07 season in solid fashion, with the Patriots at 2-2 overall and the Lady Patriots also at 2-2 after having lost their last two games by a combined five points. The Wardlaw boys have defeated Aiken Prep (43-33) and Anderson Christian (37-32), while being dominated by Greenwood Christian (49-17 ) and falling just short against W.W. King Academy 31-27. The Patriots are 2-0 in region play. Justin Ouzts leads the team in scoring, averaging 11 points per game. He is followed by Stephen Balentine, Kevin Ginn and Coty Courtney. Ross Williams and Travis Gagnon have also made solid contributions. Ouzts posted a double-double of 14 points, 11 boards in the team's opener against Aiken Prep. On the girls' side of the ledger, the Lady Patriots dismantled Aiken Prep (74-5) and dropped Greenwood Christian (57-56) to start 2-0. However, consecutive tough losses - a 38-35 setback at the hands of W.W. King and a 37-35 loss to the CSRA Warriors - have evened the team's record at 2-2. Guard Elizabeth Stone has been outstanding, scoring 27, 31, 21 and 10 points respectively in the team's four games for a stellar average of 22 per outing. In scoring 31 against Greenwood Christian, a team the Lady Patriots trailed most of the game, Stone nailed a three-pointer with just three seconds left. Then, she drilled a 17-footer to win at the buzzer in overtime. Anna Yarborough and Kristina Graves have also been solid, with each player having reached double figures twice. Briggs Belcher has also contributed mightily. The bad news for the Lady Patriots is that Stone went out with a knee injury in the final moments of the first half against the CSRA Warriors. She did not return that game and her availability is unknown for the remainder of the season. The Wardlaw teams will host the 10th annual Ten Governors Classic this week, continuing Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Games start at 4 p.m. through Friday and will feature eight games on Saturday starting an 9 a.m.
