Lander Continuing Education schedules

GREENWOOD - Lander University will offer nearly three dozen continuing education summer courses spanning a wide range of interests for adults and young people. Most classes are scheduled to begin in June.   Veteran player Jean Kirkpatrick will teach bridge for beginners and a refresher course for bridge players. There will also be classes on the fundamentals of duplicate bridge taught by Carolyn Rossie and Helen Hughes. Several opportunities are available for those who want to expand their creative talents. In his art framing workshop, Harry Nicoll will teach participants how to mat, mount and frame photographs and other graphic art. Instructor and graphic artist Lance Anderson will share the fine points of drawing comics from concept through drawing and inking. Artist Lynda Macaluso of McCormick will teach basic pencil drawing, and artist and photographer Fred Galloway will introduce students to acrylic painting. Lander associate professor of English Virginia Manning Dumont-Poston will lead students through an intense three-week course focusing on creative writing including fiction, nonfiction and poetry. An introductory computer course is scheduled for students who want to learn the fundamentals of Microsoft Word, using the Internet, e-mailing and more. Lander reference librarian Adam Haigh will teach the course. Karen Minter of Lander’s Information Technology Services will show participants in her class how to create and manage an online photo gallery. Susan Justesen of Ms. Susan’s School of Music, the first licensed and accredited Simply Music instructor in South Carolina, will teach the revolutionary method for learning to play the piano. There will be two sessions for adults and seniors, one in June and another in August. Lander’s continuing education summer lineup also includes classes in communication. Lisa Anderson will introduce students to sign language for conversing with the deaf and hard of hearing. There will be an introductory class and a more advanced class in conversational Spanish, both taught by Venezuela native Thais Hardin. Fitness and health will feature the basics of yoga and yoga for stress reduction. Instructor Debbie Harvey has six years of experience as a Yoga Alliance teacher. Another course will focus on the fun associated with shag dancing. Shag enthusiast Rhett Sanders will lead the class through the steps that make up South Carolina’s state dance. Kristin Mabry, a physical education major and head lifeguard at Lander, will teach swimming classes for beginners and intermediate swimmers. There will be two sessions for beginners as young as five years old and two intermediate classes. Artist and photographer Fred Galloway will teach two digital photography courses for 13-to-18 year olds. He will also teach students in the same age group the techniques of drawing and sketching and fine art painting. Professional seamstress Melva Key will demonstrate the basics of sewing and how to sew vintage pillowcase dresses. For those interested in weaving, basket weaver Jane Wilson will show participants how to weave market baskets and egg baskets. Longtime agent and broker Isaac Shaffer takes the mystery out of insurance when he explores the theory and practices involved in various lines of insurance including property and motor vehicle insurance. SAT PRO is a follow-up course for students who completed SAT Doctor classes last spring and plan to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test in October. Classes will begin on Aug. 29. The instructor is Dr. Lillian Craton, assistant professor of English at Lander. On June 3, Ann Bowen, a Lander graduate and member of the university’s Board of Trustees, will present a lecture on the history of South Carolina. She is the author of two books on Greenwood. The Continuing Education Department has arranged a July bus trip to the Atlanta Aquarium for a new Titanic exhibit, which uses authentic artifacts and hands-on displays to bring to life the story of the ill-fated vessel.
