Twittering and Blogging in the Blue Ridge Mountains
Penny Hunt and I braved it to the Blue Ridge Writer’s Conference this past week. The Conference was held at Ridgecrest, which is the Methodist version of Lake Junaluska for the brethren and sisteren of the Baptist faith.
It was like church camp without the noise, immature boys, and pranks.
We met some fabulous writers; fiction, non-fiction, devotional writers, etc. Most of the non-fiction writers were the products of dysfunctional Southern families so I felt right at home.
As Penny and I became acquainted with many writers who shared their stories, Penny would say, “Is she going to be in your next article or mine?” It was like playing cards; you take this one and I will take that one.
There were several entertaining moments from the men and women who were the keynote speakers.
The director of the Conference told an interesting story about some uneducated gang members spray-painting a message on his church. It read, “Satin Rules.” My son, Holmes saw a similar email and written below was, “One hell of a fabric.”
There was much discussion of a network messaging system called, Twitter. Twittering is a very popular way to communicate sending brief text messages up to 140 characters.
Todd Starnes, a Fox News radio host and wonderful speaker told his aunt from Mississippi he was Twittering. She was so concerned she had his name added to the prayer list at the local Baptist church.
Another speaker created a delightful keynote wondering what the messages would be if characters in the Bible Twittered?
“I think I will take a bath.” Bathsheba.
“Wish I hadn’t looked.” David.
You are WHAT? Joseph.
The four days Penny and I spent at Ridgecrest gave us some great ideas and challenged us to be better writers.
So if you hear us talk about Twittering and Blogging, we are not suffering from strange medical conditions.
Hopefully our new experience in writing will give some of you a reason to Twitter and Blog, too.
