George Daniel Bailey

A Memorial Mass for Mr. George Daniel Bailey, Retired Major, U.S. Army, of the Merriwether Community in Edgefield County, will be celebrated on Friday, May 22, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, 856 Old Edgefield Road, North Augusta. Burial will be private.
Mr. Bailey, born Feb. 22, 1918, died Friday, May 1, at 91 years old. Born in Middletown, N.Y., he was the younger son of the late Burt and Reina Wallace Bailey. He was a career officer in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II, having taken part in the assault on Omaha Beach on D-Day of the Normandy Invasion. His military tours included Orleans and Fontainebleau, France and Seoul, Korea. He retired from the military at Fort Gordon and in 1968 made his permanent home in Merriwether.
He was a veracious reader and engaged in a wide variety of hobbies. He was an HO model train enthusiast, astronomer, metal worker, light fixed wing pilot, gourmet cook, ham radio operator, artist, musician, computer programmer, archer, rifle and pistol expert and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He was multi-talented and self-taught in most of his interests.
He is survived by his son, James D. (Laurie) Bailey, Aiken, daughter, Beverly (John) Sniffin, Richmond, Va.; grandchildren, G. Daniel (Tara) Bailey II, Evans, Ga., Sarah Elizabeth (Greyson) Thomas and J. Samuel Bailey, Aiken Christine (Colin) Formulak, John R. (Kristin) Sniffin, Ned H. Sniffin, Ellen (Charles) Barrett; great-grandchildren, Erin and Bennett Formulak, all of Virginia; and numerous Bailey-Boehm nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and older brother Richard, he was predeceased by the love of his life, Ellen Boehm Bailey, his wife of 63 years.
