Mr. Charles Gary “Sonny” Benfield Sr., 68, of Edgefield, died Thursday, April 9, 2009 at Edgefield County Hospital.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, April 14, at 1 p.m. at Philadelphia United Methodist Church Cemetery, 2260 Chester Hwy., York, SC 29745.

Mr. Benfield was born to the late Preston M. and Mary Merritt Benfield on June 26, 1940. He retired from the Edgefield County School District and served on the Edgefield Town Council for five years. During his retirement, he enjoyed carpentry, fishing and his “morning coffee club.”

He was known for his charismatic personality, determination and love of life.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Kathy Peeler Benfield; two sons, Justin and his wife Erin of Greenville and Gary Jr. and fiancée Angie of North Augusta; granddaughters Madison Benfield of Greenville and Amaya Emmons of North Augusta; stepson David Satcher and wife Michelle; stepdaughter Lisa Satcher Smith and husband Bill; sister Fran Powell and husband Larry of Irmo.

Memorials may be made to the church.
