James P. "Jake" Doolittle

Mr. James P. (Jake) Doolittle, 86, of Hwy 23 West in Modoc, husband of the late Sallie Mae Doolittle, died Thursday, June 3, 2010 at the V.A. Medical Center.
Graveside services were held Sunday, June 6, at 2 p.m. at Red Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Doolittle was born in Edgefield County and was a World War II Army veteran. He attended Red Oak Grove Baptist Church and was a retired textile worker.
Survivors include three daughters, Sallie Ann Smith, Modoc, Lois Feagin, Edgefield, Patricia Doolittle, North Augusta; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Theodore R. "Ted" Harris

Mr. Theodore R. 'Ted" Harris, 64, of Glenmore Avenue in Belvedere, died Monday, May 31, 2010.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 5, at 11 a.m. at Old Storm Branch Baptist Church, with the Rev. Martin Ryan officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Harris, a native of Edgefield County, was a retired detective for the Richmond County Police Department and Blythe Police Department. He was a graduate of Edgefield County High School and a member of Shaws Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Sadie Devine Harris; his mother, Everdener Harris; two sons, Sherton Leonard Harris and Michael Cook; three daughters, Andrea Cannon (Curtis), Gail McKie Gibson and Amanda Darville (Michael); one brother, Leonard Harris (Barbara); four sisters, Mamie Jennings (Bishop) Shirley Hammond (Beaver), Everlener Tanks (Deke) and Penny Talbert (Ike), 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two aunts; and a host of other relatives.
G.L. Brightharp & Sons Mortuary, North Augusta, was in charge of arrangements.
 
Julia C. Herndon

Mrs. Julia Crouch Herndon, 88, of Edgefield, wife of the late Nolan Herndon, Sr., died Monday June 7, 2010 at Agape Senior Care in West Columbia, S.C.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday June 9, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Edgefield United Methodist Church, with burial in Travis Park Cemetery in Saluda. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church fellowship hall.
Mrs. Herndon was born in Saluda County and was a member of Edgefield United Methodist Church. She was a retired secretary.
Survivors include two sons, Nolan A. (Sue) Herndon Jr., West Columbia, James M. (Debbie) Herndon, Pawley’s Island; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Steve) Kodman, Kathy (Ricky) Jackson, John (Sherrie) Herndon, Jason (Jennifer) Herndon, Justin Herndon; five great-grandchildren, Patrick, Thomas, and Drew Kodman, Taylor and Hunter Jackson.

Frank Malcolm Jones

Mr. Frank Malcolm Jones, 67, of Modoc, died Sunday, June 6, 2010 at University Hospital in Augusta, Ga.

Mattie B. Key McCain

Mrs. Mattie B. Key McCain, 72, of Lakeview Road in North Augusta, died Sunday, May 30, 2010 at UPAC of Aiken.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 3, 2010, at 1 p.m. at Carey Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Clifford Williams officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. McCain, a native of Edgefield County, was a member of Carey Hill Baptist Church where she served on the deaconess ministry, choir ministry and couples ministry. Survivors include her husband, Johnnie F. McCain, North Augusta; a daughter, Lisa McCain- Walker (Byron), Lithia Springs, Ga.; a son, Larry McCain (Cynthia), Augusta, Ga.; two sisters, Florine Worley, Jersey City, N.J., and Irene Mobley, Philadelphia, Pa.; a brother, Alonzo Key (Rosa Lee), Augusta, Ga.; four grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Lila Dowd Powell

Funeral services for Mrs. Lila Dowd Powell, 96, of Johnston, were held Monday, June 7, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. She died Friday, June 4.
Mrs. Powell was born in Little Mountain, a daughter of the late James Milton and Maggie Shealy Dowd. She was married to the late Clarence F. Powell.
She is survived by two sons, C.F. (Rick) and wife Emily of Johnston, Donald and wife Jackie of Rockville, VA.; two daughters, Jane Mims of Johnston and Dianne Hare and husband Bob of Edgefield; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Joyce Ophelia; six brothers; and two sisters.

Michael David Riggs

Mr. Michael David Riggs, 40, of Trenton, died Friday, June 4, 2010.
A celebration of his life service was conducted Monday, June 7, at 2 p.m. in the chapel at Napier Funeral Home, with the Revs. Stephen Phillips and Jody Padgett officiating. Burial was private.
