Shirley F. Padgett

Mrs. Shirley Franklin Padgett, 61, of Pinto Lane, Trenton, wife of Curtis W. Padgett, flew away into the heavens on March 8, 2010.
Graveside Services was held Thursday March 11, 2010 at 11 A.M. at the Padgett Family Cemetery with Pastor Scott Franklin officiating.
Mrs. Padgett was born in Augusta, Ga. and was of the Baptist Faith. She was a Homemaker and was retired from the Edgefield County School District. There are not enough words to describe how amazing she will always be.
Survivors include her husband, one Daughter- Christie Morgan, Edgefield, two Sons- Milton Rivers, North Augusta, Warren Underwood, Trenton. One Sister- Billie Jean Crawford, Augusta, two Brothers- Kenneth Franklin, Warrenville, Pete Franklin Sr., Grovetown. two Grandchildren, Justin K. Morgan and Cameron Morgan.
Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Christopher Long

Graveside services for Christopher Edward Long, age 35, were held Monday, March 15, 2010 at 3pm at Mt of Olives Cemetery, Johnston. The family will receive friends at the gravesite immediately following the service.
Mr. Long, a native of Ward, died Saturday, March 13, 2010 at Hospice House in Greenwood, SC. He was a son of Joel and Pam Long and was a member of Ward Baptist Church.
He is survived by his parents; son: Christopher K. Long of Waterloo, SC, sister Jessica A. Long; brother, Clifton J. Long (Angela), and grandmother: Jessie B. Long all of Ward. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Clark and Mr. Frank J. Long, all of Ward.
Memorials may be made to Bland Funeral Home, P. O. Box 425, Johnston, SC for the Christopher Long Memorial Fund.

Ivory Dukes

Mr. Ivory Dukes, 68, died on March 5, 2010 at Aiken Regional Medical Center. He was born in Edgefield County. Survivors include: wife, Julia Mae Dukes; children, Steven Dukes, Lynette Dukes, Barbara A. Twiggs, Sandra Dukes and Melanie Dukes; siblings, James Dukes, Jr., Thomas Dukes, Corine Simpkins, and Ann Jones; 15 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and other relatives. Funeral services were held on Wednesday March 10 at Pine Hill Baptist Church with a burial in the church cemetery.
Butler and Sons Funeral Home, Saluda, SC, was in charge of arrangements.

Karl Benner

Mr. Karl Benner, 82, of Plum Branch Rd., died March 11, 2010 at his residence. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Mr. Benner was born in Alten Buseck, Germany and was a retired Auto Mechanic. Survivors include his sons, Willi Benner, Pete Benner, and Paul (Lisa) Benner; daughter, Maria Maestri; sister, Emmi Nass; grandchildren, Sean Benner, Lucas Benner, Matthew Maestri, Amanda Benner, Kate Gardner, Samantha Benner, Wesley Fulhum, and Carrie Anne Fulghum; great grandchildren, Isabella Benner and Nathanael Benner. Mr. Benner was predeceased by his wife, Maria Benner; a daughter, Anne Gardner; and brother, Willie Benner. Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice. The family will receive friends for Maria Benner and Karl Benner on Wednesday, March 17, 2010, from 6 to 8 pm at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home.

Mary E Price

Mary E. Price, 97, of 2082 Lakeview Drive, Johnston, passed away on March 10, 2010. She was a member of the Bacon Chapel FBH Church. Funeral Services was held Sunday March 14, 2010 at the Bacon Chapel FBH Church. Rev. Delmar Calloway, Eugolist. Interment was in the Church cemetery. She leaves to cherish her memory: two daughters, Lela P. Edwards and Ruth Jackson, both of Johnston, SC; four sons, Beaufort (Mary) Price Jr. and John Henry Price, both of Johnston, Curtis Price of Greenwood, and Franklin Price of Augusta; two brothers, Broadus (Charlotte) Payne of Columbia, SC and George (Thomasina) Payne of Li, NY; 30 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

Pauline M. Steele

Services for Pauline McGee Steele, 91, the funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Wittenberg Lutheran Church with the Rev. Michael Sherman officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Visitation will be from 10 to 11 am at the church.  Memorials may be made to Wittenberg Lutheran Church P. O. Box 3447 Leesville, SC 29070.  Barr-Price Funeral Home is assisting the family.
  Mrs. Steele died Sunday March 14, 2010.  Born in Edgefield County, she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Fannie Doolittle McGee.  She was a member of Wittenberg Lutheran Church, retired from JB Martin Company and was a former receptionist at Barr-Price Funeral Home.  She was a member of the DAV, American Legion and VFW Auxiliary.  Surviving are a son, David Mayson of Las Vegas, NV, 4 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews including Peggy and George “Skip” Harris of Lexington. She was predeceased by her husband, G. Cecil Steele and a son, James Henry Mayson.

Mamie L. Gordon

Mrs. Mamie L. Gordon, 88, of 724 Hwy 378 East, Edgefield, SC., entered into rest March 12, 2010. Funeral services will be announced later. Mrs. Gordon, a native of Edgefield County, was a member of Triphant Church of Jesus Christ. Survivors include two daughters, Gwendolyn Matthews, Columbia, SC., Joyce Gordon Berrcotte, Charleston, SC.; two sons, Sidney (Mattie) Gordon, Edgefield, SC., Randy Gordon, Charleston SC.; one sister, Charles Scott, Columbia, SC.; one brother, Milligan (Constance) Adams, Columbia, SC.; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Friends may call at the residence or the funeral home.

Helen M. Culpepper

Mrs. Helen M. Culpepper, 78, of Merriwether Community in Edgefield County, SC, entered into rest in the presence of loved ones and family on March 12, 2010 at Trinity Hospital. Her funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, March 17, 2010 in the Rowland Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Tommy Stacks, minister of the Central Church of Christ, Bastrop, LA officiating. Entombment will be private. Mrs. Culpepper was a native of Macon, GA, a faithful founding member of Belvedere Church of Christ, and a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Mrs. Culpepper is survived by her beloved husband of 54 years, Leslie Culpepper; a daughter Laura Bowden Griffin (Gary) of North Augusta; two brothers, Bob R. Barnette (Annette) and R. Earle Barnette (Evelyn) Both of Macon, GA; a sister, Edna G. Barnette of Harrisburg, IL; four grandchildren, Clay Culpepper (Amber) of Statesboro, GA, Jennifer Culpepper of Augusta; Brandon Bowden and Amanda Bowden both of New Ellenton; two great-grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Reese and Caleb Herndon and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.H. Barnette, a brother L.H. Barnette and a son J.L. (Jamie) Culpepper. The family will receive friends at Rowland Funeral Home Wednesday, March 17, 2010 from 12:30 pm until service time. Archie Braxton, Jr., 62 of 508 Rocky Creek Road, Johnston, passed away on March 7, 2010. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, March 20, 2010 at 2pm at the Union Baptist Church in Trenton. Reverend Nathaniel Langford, Eulogist. He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Bessie Mae Braxton, North Augusta, SC; three sons, Daniel (Evelyn) Braxton, SC Arthur (Wendy) Braxton, Clearwater, SC, and Bill Braxton, North Augusta, SC; three step-daughters, Annie James, Janet Blocker, and Jackie James, all of North Augusta, SC; a sister, Dorothy Ann Frazier, Winterhaven, FL; and two brothers, Henry Williams, Allendale, SC and Charlie Braxton, Trenton, SC; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, an uncle, an aunt, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Shirley P. Simpkins, 57, of 43 Spring Road, Johnston, passed away on March 10, 2010. She was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. Funeral Service was held March 14, 2010 at the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. Rev. Lewis Burt, Pastor. Interment was in the Johnston Seven Day Adventist Church. Shirley leaves to cherish her memory husband, Bobby Simpkins of Johnston; Mother, Ruth Wilkins of Ridge Spring; four sons, Bobby Simpkins, Jr. of Charlotte, NC, Dexter Simpkins, Darrell Simpkins and Brian Simpkins, all of Johnston, SC; four brothers, James (Nancy) Williams of Johnston, SC, Wyman (Gracie) Williams, and Cleveland Williams, Both of Patterson, NJ and Spenser (Debbie) Williams of Cinunetti, OH; one sister, Rose Williams of Jersey City, NJ; eight grandchildren, Nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
