Water Line And Roadway Repaired, Martintown Road Open
A ruptured water line and subsequent roadway damage that closed a section of Martintown Road from Currytown Road to Briggs Road near Sportman Corner early Wednesday morning has been repaired and the road re-opened to traffic.
Around 2 a.m. Wednesday morning, officials say a 4-inch break in a water line covered the road and before the deluge began to separate newer layers of asphalt to separate from older layers, tearing huge chunks in the road surface.
The water line had been repaired by 9 a.m. Wednesday morning, but the section of Martintown Road was expected to remain closed for at least the next 24 to 48 hours.
John Hare of the Edgefield County Water and Sewer Authority said some customers in the Cannon Hill and Summer Lake and some homes on Woodlawn Road were without service for a short time and that workers posted notices recommending residents to boil water for cooking and drinking, at least for a short time.
“We’re taking samples, but it’s mainly a precautionary measure,” Hare said Wednesday. “It’s just for drinking water and cooking. Everything else should be fine.”
Briggs Road and Currytown Road (connecting to Sweetwater Road) are being used as detours around the damaged section.
