JOHNSTON – In a special called meeting Monday evening, the Edgefield County School Board voted to hire veteran educator Dr. Walter L. Tobin as its interim Superintendent.

Following an hour-long interview held in executive session, board member James Bibbs made the motion “to hire the applicant at the same salary scale as our previous Superintendent to be effective on Monday.”

Board Member Sallie Cooks seconded the motion, and with no discussion, the board voted 4-1 to hire Dr. Tobin as interim Superintendent. School board Chairman Brad Covar and board member Chris Hoffman had left the meeting before the vote.

Dr. Tobin began his teaching career at Voorhees High School in Bamberg School District in 1964 and served as a Coach and Counselor. He brings more than 40 years of service with the South Carolina School systems, serving in capacities as Principal, Secondary Supervisor, and Director of Adult Education.

He retired from the Orangeburg School District Five in 1999 after serving seven years as Superintendent. He served as Interim Superintendent from 2001-2007 in Bamberg School District Two, Calhoun County, Fairfield County, Newberry County, and most recently, Spartanburg. Should Dr. Tobin accept the position, which is considered likely, Dr. Carol Lenderman, acting Superintendent, will resume her duties as Assistant Superintendent.

In other business, the board voted unanimously to approve the kindergarten position requested by the Administration at Douglas Elementary. With no other business to discuss, the meeting adjourned.
