Two of A Kind

First Byline:
MIKE ROSIER/Publisher

He brings the jolly baritone and she has the sweet soprano.

Taken together, Calvin Henderson and Jane Jenkins Herlong have made for some great Holiday cheer in keeping the one-liners coming while entertaining the crowd during the annual Town of Edgefield Christmas Parade. Sunday’s 2009 installment was no different, as the dynamic local duo of professional deejay and pro singer and speaker extraordinaire kept the pace moving for a packed crowd.

And the audience is hardly alone in soaking up the fun.

Herlong said she is up there having a blast, adding that there have been several times when she has to catch herself from perhaps taking a tumble from the platform after laughing so hard at one of Henderson’s many jokes.

“He’s just so much fun to banter with,” she said of her co-host. “The way that he knows everyone and picks on people is just too funny. You can’t help but laugh. And he’s just a great guy to be around.”

For his part, Henderson said all the ribbing is in good fun.

“I do talk about people, but I’m always gentle,” he said.

The chemistry the two display – for which they were complimented quite often on Sunday – is no act, as they are great friends aside from professional events and hosting. Herlong said one of the funniest moments happened when she asked Henderson to move a mantle at her home. Unknown to Henderson, the thing was crawling with spiders, which began falling out as soon as he picked it up.

“He’s scared of spiders and he just started hollering and all that and it was one of the funniest things I have ever seen,” she said.

But the tables have been turned as well.

Herlong had a mouse which needed to be taken out and with no other family members around she naturally called on Henderson to get rid of the wiggling critter for her. She thought the mouse was disposed of until she was shocked to see it dangling and spinning just inches from her face – complete with a bellowing laugh from Henderson.

“You should have seen the look on her face,” he jokes of the moment.

All of which makes it understandable how the two get the most out of each other on stage.

“He’s something else, I’ll tell you that much,” she said.

“I think people enjoy it,” Henderson said of their work with the parade. “We try to make it entertaining and fun and just try to keep it moving and not let it get boring.”

With these two on stage anything is possible – except a dull moment, that is.
