TRENTON – A popular Trenton eatery, Trenton BBQ, was gutted by flames Friday afternoon when a kitchen fire got out of control.

A dispatch call for a structure fire went out to local fire departments just before 2:30 p.m. this afternoon, with units from Trenton, Edgefield and County Line fire departments responding to the blaze. Smoke from the fire was visible in Edgefield and down Highway 25 for several miles in both directions.

Fire units were able to bring the flames in the front dining section of the restaurant relatively quickly. However, the fire was much more stubborn in the kitchen area where it was reported to have started, where the roof of the building actually began to show signs of buckling.

There were also problems with traffic.

A detour was quickly established along the 1.2-mile stretch of roadway between Highway 25 near Trenton BBQ and Highway 19, which passes by the entrance to the Trenton Correctional Facility. But a traffic incident near the railroad tracks and the presence of a Norfolk Southern train brought travel along the detour to a complete halt around 3:30 p.m.

There have been no reports that the train was involved in the incident.

There will be more information on this breaking story later this evening.
