JOHNSTON - A single-car crash on Highway 23 near Wardlaw Academy on Sunday evening downed one utility pole, cracked another and flickered lights for miles around.

Two power lines were also brought down as result of the crash, which occurred just after 8 p.m. when a white Honda Accord headed northbound toward Johnston appeared to have left the roadway on the right side of the highway before crossing the opposite lane and striking the utility pole.

According to information gathered at the scene, the driver, a 16-year-old female, was able to exit the vehicle on her own.

Her injuries were not believed to be life threatening. Emergency crews responded from both Edgefield and Johnston, while an official with SCE&G was also on the scene.

An investigation into the cause of the crash by the S.C. State Highway Patrol is pending.
