Approximately 50 pets “strutted their stuff” at the annual Paws in the Park event sponsored by All God’s Creatures Saturday at Oakley Park. About 75 people turned out to enjoy the activities and the warm weather.
This was the sixth fundraiser of this type done by the organization and the first time it has been held at this location.
Event co-chair Becky Turner said she thought it was the biggest crowd they’ve had so far.
“It was a nice setting,” she said. “I know there were more people than last year because it rained last year. It seemed to me there were more children there and they had a good time.”
She added that the organization is well-known and Denise Holcombe, director and founder, “does such a good job with the animals.”
Taking the prize for the “Best Tail Wagger” was “Verdi” with owner Joyce Bowers of Aiken. “Best Smooch Pooch” went to “Roxie,” belonging to Mirayna Caldwell. The Most Unusual Trick was done by “Sugar Kisses,” belonging to Marliena Stay and Musical Chairs with Pets was won by Jami Lisenby and his dog “Smokey.” All of the pet winners received a leash holder and bandana.
Door prizes were awarded David Dickau of Edgefield (a donation by Lee St. Amand of Movie Gallery items including a DVD, soft drinks and popcorn) and Steve Perun of Mt. Vintage (a piece of Jane Bess pottery).
Mother’s Day and Father’s Day Raffle baskets went to Toodie Furr of Johnston and Whitney Ellis of Edgefield.
Pat Czaikowski was on hand to give some instruction in pet obedience. She will be teaching dog and puppy training classes in Edgefield beginning May 6.
Lunch and soft drinks were available, and also pictures of pets and owners. Baked goods were on sale.
The Main Street Dog Walk was cancelled because it became too warm and there were concerns for the pets (and owners).
“We’d like to thank everyone for coming out and supporting us and for all the contributions they made,” said Turner. “This is one of our major fundraisers and the money spent goes to a very good cause.”
