Morning collision at train trestle claims life of local man
An Edgefield man was killed early Monday morning when the small Ford truck he was driving was crushed by a tractor trailer container unit knocked astride when the tractor trailer carrying the unit collided with the old train trestle entering Edgefield.
Officials at the scene said the man, 27-year-old Jeremy Jay of Church St. in Edgefield, was killed instantly.
It is the second fatality on Edgefield County roads this year.
Tractor trailer vehicles striking the trestle is hardly unusual,
as the 13-foot-tall trestle annually stops two to three such vehicles which are carrying loads taller than the trestle.
Rarely if ever do those collisions result in fatalities.
The crash happened around 7 a.m. and wreckage was still being removed from the scene over two hours later. A crane unit from Augusta was called in to help remove the container.
The tractor trailer was reportedly carrying parts for the “Superload” generator now moving through Greenwood County.
