Jim Caudle Reef Receives Materials from S.C. Army National Guard

First Byline:
S.C. DNR Release

N. Myrtle Beach, S.C.— More than 30 armored personnel vehicles were added to the Jim Caudle Artificial Reef today as a part of the REEF-X project.

A collaborative effort between the S.C. Army National Guard and the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the REEF-X project utilizes decommissioned Army vehicles to create artificial reefs in the Atlantic Ocean. This year, the Jim Caudle Reef and Little River Offshore Reef in Horry County were selected to receive the materials.

The Jim Caudle Reef has been credited as the most visited artificial reef in the State generating millions in revenue for the local economy in both the tourism and fishing industries. According to Ron McManus, Executive Director of the Dixie Chicken Funament, an annual fishing tournament whose proceeds benefit the Jim Caudle Reef, “It is always a great day to see this reef grow and we are grateful to both the S.C. Army National Guard and the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for their efforts to make this possible.”
