Green and Gone: 2010 Shamrock Run a Smash Hit

First Byline:
MIKE ROSIER/Publisher

This year the response was overwhelming.

And the Fourth Annual Shamrock Run, which was by all indications a smashing success (a final tally of the donation which will be made to the American Heart Association was not available at press time), was better than ever after more than 185 participant’s took off as Natalia Daniels fired the starter’s pistol for the start of the race.

This year’s event – a 2.4-mile run/walk starting in front of the Bi-Lo shopping Center – was held in memory of retired S.C. State Trooper Jeff Daniels, who passed away last year. His wife, Mrs. Daniels, was moved by the large turnout.

“This really is nice to see all of these people to come out,” she said. “It means a lot to see this many people come out here today. I don’t know how much money has been raised, but I hope they’re able to make a big donation.”

Shamrock Run organizer Kerry Klein said she was overwhelmed by the tremendous support – quite literally.

“We really didn’t expect to have this many people, but that’s a good thing,” she said. ‘We had some issues with getting all the times and some things like that, but everyone was wonderful and this could not have been done without our sponsors and our volunteers. We had a lot of people to give donations and it was just a great day with a big rainbow at the end. And the Daniels family is such a special family and just special people.”

Augustan runner Larry Evans finished the race first in just 11:49:00, followed by Orinthal Striggles (13:51:00) and Trent Miller (13:54:00). The top female time was turned in by Elizabeth Holmes (18:35:00). Hannah Pressley earned the title of Best Irish Dressed, which was rewarded with a $40 prize.

Jimmy Daniels, brother of Jeff Daniels, was the last participant to cross the finish line, complete with his best Redd Foxx impression. The support received by the event held a deeper meaning for his family, said Mr. Daniels.

“It’s something special to see, knowing Jeff and what he meant to everyone who knew him,” he said. “We’d just like to thank the town and everyone involved for doing this in his memory.”
