Edgefield County voters face choices June 8

First Byline:
SARITA CHOUREY

COLUMBIA - Edgefield County voters will have lots of choices in the June 8 primary elections, including two Republicans vying for the 83rd S.C. House District.

The two-year seat is open because Rep. Don Smith, R-North Augusta, is not running for re-election, leaving Republican candidates Dea Baldwin and Bill Hixon to square off for the job. Republican House members in the Aiken County delegation, which includes the 83rd state House seat, have shied away from publicly favoring either candidate, citing the need to work with whomever wins.

There are no Democratic candidates for the 83rd state House seat.

Edgefield County's other S.C. House member, Rep. Bill Clyburn, D-Aiken, is up for re-election. But since he faces no challenge from either party, his name will not appear on the primary election ballot.

Voters must also fill an open seat in the S.C. congressional delegation, because U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett, is not seeking the position again. Instead he is competing with three others running for governor in the Republican primary. There are three Democrats running in that party’s primary.

Edgefield County voters will have six Republicans and two Democrats from which to choose Barrett’s successor to the 3rd congressional district.

Republicans hoping to go to Washington include: Richard Cash, Neal Collins, Jeff Duncan, Joe Grimaud, Rex Rice and Frank Michael Vasovski; Democrats include Brian Ryan B. Doyle and Jane Ballard Dyer, who was the Democratic candidate in the last election but failed to unseat Barrett.

Other contests to appear on Tuesday’s ballot include races for governor, lieutenant governor, state agriculture commissioner, treasurer, secretary of state, attorney general, adjutant general, comptroller general, secretary of education and U.S. Senate. Candidates for Edgefield County Council districts 1, 2 and 4 will also appear.

The general election is Nov. 2.
