2008 Shamrock Run/Walk shaping up

First Byline:
ANNE WAITS/Staff Writer

The 2nd Annual Shamrock Run/Walk will get underway Saturday, March 15, at 11 a.m. in Edgefield. This year's race will be in memory of Kenneth L. Kaltz. All proceeds will go to the American Heart Association. “We're looking forward to it,” said Kerry Klein, chairperson. “Last year's event was fantastic. We're hoping it will double in size this year.” Klein, owner of The Cutting Corner, was asked to spearhead the project last year because she is a great lover of St. Patrick's Day. “I don't get excited about a lot of other holidays,” she said. “But I've just always loved St. Patrick's Day. What better way to celebrate than to raise money for a worthy cause and commemorate the life of someone from the community.” The 2.4 mile race will begin at Bi-Lo in Carolina Square and will finish at the Edgefield Town Square. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. A celebration on the Square will include live music, a contest for the Best Looking Leprechaun ($50 prize), party favors, green drink and green sweets. Park Row Market will offer corned beef sandwiches and Ten Governors will serve green grits for breakfast. Edgefield Billiard Parlor will serve green beer. A special race for children 7 and under will also be held on the Square. Entry fees are $17 through March 10; afterwards, $25. There is no entry fee for children 7 and under. There will be no rain date. A free T-shirt will go to runners/walkers registered by March 10. First place prize is $500; 2nd place is $150; and 3rd place is $50. Kaltz's family will be on hand the day of the event to help honor his memory. “He was an avid runner and could be seen walking and running in the neighborhood often,” said his son, Mark. “He ran the course of this race many times. He was very health conscious and never smoked.” Kaltz was stricken two years ago with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a disease with no certain cause and no cure. He died Feb. 22, 2007. “He had a great business career and retired several years ago. He enjoyed traveling with my mother,” Mark said. “He wasn't sick a long time. After he was diagnosed, he lived about a year and a half. He never lost his sense of humor. He had good spirits to the end. The family knows he is in a better place. He endured a good bit of suffering toward the last.” Kaltz came to Edgefield in 1970 to oversee the construction of Tranter Incorporated, where he rose from engineer to chief executive officer. During his tenure at Tranter, he directed the donation of the property that now houses the National Wild Turkey Federation. He was also active in his community, serving on the Edgefield County Water Authority Board, the board of directors for Pine Ridge Country Club and Wardlaw Academy. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and gardener and ran road races across the country, including the Peachtree in Atlanta, the Cooper River Bridge Run in Charleston and the Bay to Breakers Run in San Francisco. His family includes his wife Pat and his children, Mark and wife Susan of Destin, Fla.; Jeff and wife Theresa of Greenwood; Kurt and wife Dana of Edgefield; and Lisa and husband Leslie of North Augusta. He had 10 grandchildren. Entry forms for the Shamrock Run/Walk can be obtained at The Cutting Corner, Fitness Works and Edgefield Town Hall. They also can be found on edgefieldsc.net.
