RIDGE SPRING NEWS & the Friends of Ridge Spring
RIDGE SPRING — There was plenty of squash, cucumbers, boiled peanuts, beautiful flowers including gorgeous daylilies from the Yonces, potatoes, cucumbers, plums, string beans, cabbage, and of course PEACHES, at the farmer's market.
The Yon's delicious sweet corn is available at the Farmer's Market. This is their last week, though. They will also have it for sale during the week beside Top of the Ridge Country Store on Main Street in Ridge Spring — call them at 803-685-5048 for availability.
Tony Bartl will have peaches and cream corn. There will be watermelons and cantaloupes this Saturday, from Titan Farms. Tomatoes will be here. A new plant grower was there this past Saturday. Come check us out. We start early and this past week, the Raburns were sold out by 9:27 AM.
From the Mayor's Desk: Although Saturday rivaled weather history for hot days, there was a large turnout for the Ridge Hill Baptist Church's sponsored Community Cook-off.
The event was organized by the young adults who had everything well planned with a day filled with wonderful food, entertainment for the kids, as well as gospel music. This was a most moving event with the entire community coming together. Chris Cockrell, Ridge Spring's deputy; David Sawyer, Fire Chief; and Frank Daniels, County Councilman, had the honor of judging the cook-off.
Tuesday night of last week, our fire department along with Monetta and Saluda responded to a house fire here in town. It was 10 p.m. at night when I went down. I had never realized the effects that humidity and heat had on fireman in just a short period of time. The need for bottled water and Gatorade was enormous. The wives of some of the firemen try to make sure that they stay hydrated, but because of the hour, all our stores had closed and the department was quickly running out of water and Gatorade. They definitely need to have a large supply on hand for nights like this.
The next time you grocery shop, please remember our firemen, and buy an extra six-pack of water or Gatorade, and leave it by the department or Town Hall. It will be put to good use. The Council had second reading and passed the 1009-2010 budget for next fiscal year last Tuesday night.
From the Kid's Corner at the Ridge Spring Library, by Leslie Harwell: WOW! What a great turnout for story time this week. I love to see so many children and parents and grandparents excited about reading! We are getting ready for Father's Day, or Daddy's Special Day, as we called it. We read three books, "I Love You, Daddy", "My Dad Has Striped Shorts", and "Hop on Pop". The children were very attentive and excited about celebrating a special day with their dads. We all agreed that each of us has the best dad. We also painted the children's feet and put their footprints on a poem for their dads. They were glad to making a special gift for their dads. Join us each Thursday at 10:30 for children's story time.
Ridge Spring Baptist Church will hold Vacation Bible School August 2-7. Mark your calendars so your children can attend!!! This year's theme is "SonRock Kids Camp: Where Kids Build Their Lives on the Rock: Jesus!" August 2 will be the VBS Kick-off and Hotdog Supper.
