JOHNSTON - The Third Annual Marine Corporal Matthew Dillon Scholarship of Merit was held on April 30th.

The keynote speaker for the event was Medal of Honor recipient Sergeant First Class Sammy L. Davis, U.S. Army, Retired. Mr. Davis was awarded the Medal of Honor for actions on November 18, 1967, during the Vietnam Conflict.

Years later, footage of his Medal of Honor ceremony was used in the movie "Forrest Gump".

Prior to the evening's program, SFC Davis visited Wardlaw Academy to speak to students in the 6-12 grades.  He stressed the point that you never lose until you quit trying.

During his presentation he passed his Medal of Honor through the audience for all the students to hold. His presentation made a most favorable impression on all in attendance.
