Paul Blackburn and his daughter, Lori Baxley, display some of the “old gold pieces” that pass through their business, J & L Goldbuyers of America. People bring their no longer used gold to them for cash.

If it’s cash you’re looking for to finish up your Christmas shopping, Paul Blackburn and Lori Baxley may have just the right solution for you.

“Look around the house and clean out your jewelry box,” Blackburn said. “Many people have old gold chains and class rings lying around that they’re no longer wearing – some of it is broken – and they bring it in and get cash for it. We also buy sterling silver. You’d be amazed how much you can get for it.”

Blackburn and Baxley brought their business, J & L Gold Buyers of America, to Edgefield several weeks ago and set up in Crouch Ace Hardware. So far, they’ve done pretty well, Blackburn said.

Blackburn started in business about 1983 in Clearwater as owner of J & L Used Cars. He holds a business degree from Augusta State University and has been married to his wife Karen for 47 years. He has a reputation as a businessman for 30 years in the North Augusta area. In 1996, his daughter Lori Baxley, decided to open a tax service along with J & L Used Cars.

Blackburn said he is proud to be in business with his daughter and feels very lucky in that respect.

“She’s a good business partner,’ he said.

About a year ago, Blackburn’s wife sold some old gold bracelets and other items and got a pretty good price for it. At that time, Blackburn decided to go into the gold business.

“That’s what gave me the incentive,” he said. “I decided to create something for profit that would put money into people’s hands that they didn’t have before and at the same time they’d get rid of items they wouldn’t miss and don’t need anymore.”

So far, it has paid off. Blackburn and Baxley buy the gold and resell it to gold refineries.

“A lot of people don’t realize what it’s worth,” he said. “One case in Edgefield especially stands out in my mind. I gave a lady $447 for stuff she doesn’t use anymore. She was elated! She was jumping up and down, she was so excited.”

Blackburn and Baxley will be in Edgefield two more weekends this year and will return some time after Christmas.

This weekend, they will be at Crouch Ace Hardware on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be here also on Dec. 18 and 19.

“It’s a good time to make some Christmas money,” said Blackburn. “Gold prices are the highest they’ve been in recent times. We pay top dollar.”

J & L Gold Buyers also takes gold dental crowns, grills and other scrap gold.
