Edgefield Celebrates 225th Anniversary With Big Bash
Edgefield rang in its 225th birthday in style last Saturday evening with a Birthday Bash at the old Edgefield Gymnasium.
The event was attended by about 200 people.
“We wanted to do something that stood out for the 225th Birthday of Edgefield and Edgefield County,” said Sharon Nunamaker, president of the Edgefield Community Development Association who sponsored the event. “The celebration will be ongoing for the year. We plan to have two other events—a Family Fun Day in May and a Founder’s Day Picnic in July. We will have a calendar out soon.”
The kick-off dance and celebration was Nunamaker’s idea and she said they sold tickets for 10 tables of people. A large red, white and blue Birthday cake adorned the table, along with heavy hors d’oeuvres. Later in the evening the cake was lit by town dignitaries.
Edgefield Mayor Ken Durham thanked all the businessmen and women who made the event possible and called it “a great opportunity to bring the community together.”
Key West Band of the Lexington-Leesville area performed. The band, owned by guitar player Tommy Morrell, began as a two-piece duo in 1989 with two close friends making good acoustic/electric 70s style music.
Having changed members several times, it is now a four-piece beach and boogie music band consisting of Morrell on guitar; Dionne Poirier as female vocal lead; Bart Cochcroft as lead singer, guitar and keyboard player; and Rene Littell as singer and keyboard player.
“We mostly play beach, rhythm and blues and oldies music,” said Morrell. “We cater to mostly private parties and weddings. We did an event here about five years ago at the old Kendall Mill sponsored by the Catholic Church. Organizers remembered and contacted us. We’re happy to be here.”
Charlene and Clifford Williamson were among the guests enjoying the event Saturday.
“The food is good, especially the chicken salad. It’s fantastic,” said Mrs. Williamson.
“I agree,” said Mr. Williamson. “The band is great—couldn’t ask for better.”
Nunamaker said the ECDA, organized four years ago, has grown from six to over 50 members and heads a lot of town projects. Proceeds from this event will go to sponsor other events.
“This is the effort of a lot of people,” said Nunamaker. “We’re real pleased with the turn-out. We’re looking forward to the next event.”
