Presidential Address On The End Of Combat Operations In Iraq

First Byline:
Office of The President

REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT
IN ADDRESS TO THE NATION
ON THE END OF COMBAT OPERATIONS IN IRAQ

From the Oval Office

THE PRESIDENT: Good evening. Tonight, I’d like to talk to you about the end of our combat mission in Iraq, the ongoing security challenges we face, and the need to rebuild our nation here at home.

Clinton Ward Mini-festival Equals Big Fun

WARD - The Clinton Ward Festival (or the Ward Summer Bash) might have been smaller this year, but it was just as loud.

Steele Justice entertained the crowd with a variety of music as some people danced, others visited with old friends and neighbors, and children (and adults, too) played on the playground equipment.

There were two food vendors, one with funnel cakes and the other with hotdogs and hamburgers.

“We’ve done a pretty good business,” said Mary McGee with the Richland Creek Ruritan Club. “People are always hungry.”

Early Morning Fire Destroys Lakeview Road Home

NORTH AUGUSTA – Her grandfather, the Rev. Richard Mims, had built the family home in 1954 and now it was gone, steadily being consumed by the flames before her.

Shea Jackson was stunned by the burning reality.

“Unbelievable,” she said as members of the County Line and Merriwether Fire Departments worked to contain the flames to the devastated home. “You’re watching (television) one minute and don’t have a roof over your head the next. It happened just that quickly.”

The fire started after 2:30 a.m. drawing assets from the nearby departments along with other volunteer firemen in the area.

Thurmond Classmates Reunite

Former classmates of Strom Thurmond High School visited with old friends, enjoyed heavy hors d’oeuvres and danced the night away at a class reunion Saturday night at a facility called “The Country,” just outside Edgefield.

The classes of 1964-1968 drew a crowd of over 300 from places far and near.

A class president from each class held a small remembrance program to recognize classmates who have died recently or in past years. A couple of students gathered together to sing the alma mater.

District Goes Back To Class

Mixed emotions of sadness and joy were seen on faces throughout the District as Edgefield County Schools opened their doors to students Tuesday for another school year.

Erika Robinson comforted her daughter Aziyah as they waited in the Merriwether Elementary School office for paperwork to be completed. It was Aziyah’s very first day at school as she enters 5-year-old kindergarten.

“She’s ready,” said her mother. “She’s just a little nervous for the first day. And I’m very ready.”
Corly Johnson, on the other hand didn’t appear to be a bit shy as she sported her new backpack and her lunchbox with puppies on it.

Members of Edgefield County Council met Tuesday evening for a lively discussion on issues ranging from a proposed special development district in the Merriwether area to the approval of contractor bids for work on the Calliham building.

Affordable Consignments Offers Numerous Options For Shoppers

Penny Reece opened Affordable Consignments because she needed a hobby. But in doing so, she also found a way to do something for the community of Edgefield.

“With the economy the way it is, I thought it would be great to open a shop where people did not have to pay anything up front and could consign items that were still in great condition but that they no longer needed or wanted,” she said.

She pointed to a rack of gently-used accessories in her store at 304A Buncombe Street in the Piazza, following its grand opening on Saturday, July 31.

“By doing this, they can help other people in the community by keeping prices down and supplying items that other people might want or need at a price they can afford,” she said. “Meanwhile the consigner makes a little bit of money and gets rid of unwanted items, and everybody profits.”

5 Suspects Now Charged in Hayes Drive Home Invasion

The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office has now arrested a total of five suspects in connection with the shooting incident that took place on Hayes Drive last week.

Last week, Daniel Wayne Reynolds (third from left), 26, of Edgefield, left, and John David Keplinger (far right), 19, of Johnston, were arrested and are being held at the Edgefield County Detention Center without bond in the case after being charged with 1st degree burglary in the case.

This week brought new developments in the case as ECSO made three additional arrests.

Jgeorgerard Marshall (left), 28, and Neil Evan Beasley (second from left), 31, both of Johnston, were taken into custody and charged with accessory after the fact of a felony.

Standoff ends in arrest of two Johnston teens

JOHNSTON – An attempt to serve arrest warrants on two Johnston teens resulted in an hour long standoff on Sandra Drive Tuesday afternoon.

Johnston Police Chief Chris Aston said search warrants were served at their homes on Monday but the two were not located. “Investigator Lamaz Robinson got a tip (Tuesday afternoon) they were at a home on Sandra Drive, he contacted me, and I contacted the Sheriff Office, and the Edgefield PD came too, and we merged on the residence.”

The two teens refused to come out of the home and police used a negotiator to eventually convince them to surrender. “Nobody got hurt,” Chief Aston said, “none of the suspects, officers, no innocent bystanders, nobody got hurt, so everything went well.”

Arson suspected in fire at Little Stevens Creek Baptist Church

NORTHSIDE – Little Stevens Creek Baptist Church was the scene of a suspicious fire Tuesday evening around 6:30 p.m.

Two members of the church went to clean up the church since they would be out of town this weekend and when they arrived, they smelled and saw smoke in the church sanctuary. They then called 911.

The fire was contained downstairs in the basement beneath the sanctuary, which is the original and main part of the church. This church will be celebrating its 221st birthday this coming Sunday.
Officials at the scene said that evidence of arson – believed to be gasoline – was present.
